The inquiry focuses on a match between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans that took place on March 23, 2023, which exhibited atypical betting patterns concerning prop bets linked to Rozier's performance. Authorities suspect that some individuals associated with the Jontay Porter betting scandal may have possessed insider information that influenced their decision to wager against Rozier.
During that game nearly two years ago, Rozier participated for only nine minutes and 34 seconds, concluding with five points, four rebounds, and two assists. Although he was not listed on the injury report prior to the game, he did not return to play for the Hornets for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. Upon exiting the game, the Hornets deemed him doubtful to return due to discomfort in his right foot, and he was subsequently listed with that injury for the rest of the season.
Rozier has not faced any criminal charges or been accused of any misconduct.
The NBA was informed of the situation at the time but found no breaches of its regulations.
"In March 2023, the NBA was notified of unusual basketball betting activity concerning Terry Rozier's performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans," stated NBA spokesman Mike Bass. "The league undertook an investigation and did not identify any violations of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York regarding this issue and have been cooperating with that inquiry."Rozier, who was acquired by the Heat last January and has participated in 41 games for Miami this season, has refrained from making any comments thus far.
U.S. Integrity, a private entity that oversees the betting industry for irregularities, detected atypical betting trends prior to the game and alerted both sportsbooks and the NBA. Following this, several sports books opted to remove Rozier's prop bets. At least one bettor publicly asserted that they possessed insider information, which influenced their decision to wager on Rozier achieving fewer than 6.5 assists in the game.
According to iGaming News, the investigation is part of the same one involving Jontay Porter betting scandal last year.
Porter received a lifetime ban from the NBA last year due to his involvement in a gambling scandal, and he has subsequently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. While both he and Rozier have played in the NBA, their situations differ significantly. Porter was a two-way player without a long-term contract, whereas Rozier is currently under a $96 million contract. Following the scandal, sportsbooks have ceased offering prop bets on low-minute players like Porter. Furthermore, even some pay per head operators have made this change. However, this change does not affect Rozier, who has established himself as a consistent NBA starter.
In addition to Rozier, reports indicate that the government investigation is also examining the activities of this gambling ring in relation to college basketball and possible point-shaving incidents. A total of six individuals have been charged in connection with the Porter scandal, with four, including Porter, having already entered guilty pleas.
